Many Kastens came to America in the mid 1800s. We may be related but I have no info regarding the family ancestry in Europe. My Great Grandfather, Ferdinand Frederick Kasten (1817-1897) and his family, including my Grandfather Otto Carl Ferdinand Kasten (1860-1931)came from Jatzel, Pommerania, near Stettin (sp.)settled in Gibson, WI and the family radiated from the Two Rivers, WI area. My GG Grandfather was August William Kasten (1790-unk)and the Kasten linkages may have originated from his generation. I believe that I have accounted for all of Otto's siblings, but have no info regarding his father's siblings. I have 738 people on the August descendent tree.

My great grandfather was Peter Kasten, born in Germany in 1829 and living in Milwaukee in 1860. He was married to Francisca Miller and his children were Charlotte 1858, Martha 1859, Sophia 1862,Mathilde 1865 and Dora 1868. He died in 1902.

His daughter Sophia married Charles Schreiber in Milwaukee in 1880.

Thanks for your message. I haven't found any info or family connections on Wilhelmina Augusta Kasten prior to her marriage to Frank Hoffmeister. I have searched in both Illinois and Kansas trying to find any connection to her family and early life. A few things have come to light since my original post. She was a Native American from the Cherokee tribe. A photo that was found of Wilhemina supports this. I kind of doubt she was born in Germany but instead was "adopted" by a Kasten family in Illinois. The father's name listed on her death certificate was: Louis Kasten of Germany. At the time of her death on December 4, 1925 in Norton, Kansas she had 11 siblings living in Chicago; 8 brothers and 3 sisters. She's been a tricky one to figure out! If this information sounds familiar to you or someone else any clues would be greatly appreciated!! Good luck on your research as well! BJ.

Where in Kansas did she die? I am researhing the Kasten line in an around Leavenworth, Ks. Francis Kasten had children August, Mathilda, and Johanna. August died in St. Joseph about 1905. Mathilda was born in Ks. August 1870 and married Charles Luttgen/Litchen and she died in Leavenworth in 1956. I do not know who the Kasten man was who was married to Francis as she was a widow by 1880. However, there are a lot by that name n the Leavenworth area I have yet to connect. My gr gr grandmother, Maria Eva Kasten(2/15/1822-25 Dec 1897) of "Lemberg e Lotharingia, Germany" (place of origin noted in St. Mary's church records in Obernburg, Sullivan Co, NY) married my gr gr grandfather, Anton Schneider of Elsenfeld, Bavaria at some point and settled in Obernburg in the 1840s. I cannot find where either of them may have come over from Germany, nor can I find siblings for either of them. Can anyone out there help? Thanks

KASTEN - Bertha, Ida, and Louise (?)

I'm also looking for a KASTEN family that lived in Watertown, WI. My Louise was born (in "Germany") on 2 Oct 1859, married 26 Aug 1895 to Albert HANDRICH (recorded as "Handrick") in Milwaukee, and is said to have had sisters Ida and Bertha. Her parents' names were recorded as Robert "KASTENS" and Wilhelmine TESSMER at the time of her marriage, but I can't anyone matching those names. When Louise was married, she already had a son (probably out of wedlock) named Herbert KASTEN whose birth was recorded in family records in Dakota (Winona Co.) MN on 19 Oct 1883.

Louise worked as a domestic in Milwaukee until the time of her 1895 marriage, had several more children with Albert, and died in Waushara Co. on 3 March 1932.

We may be talking about the same two (or three) sisters (and some similar locations), but there doesn't seem to be much overlap yet to definitely connect them. I see that your post is from 2003 -- have you found anything since that might help us tie these names together?

Seeking info. on Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandmother Christine Louise Sophia Kasten, chr. Bergkirchen, Westfalen, Prussia, 26 Jan 1823. First married Karl Kreahmeyer/Krehmeier in GER. Immigrated to US (IL) in Aug 1864 aboard the BREMEN, now a widow with two sons and two daughters: Carl, Ernst, Caroline and Friedricka, age 9 (my gr. gr. grandmother). Lose track of sons at that point. Caroline m. Carl or Charles Harting. Christine next married Ernst Heinrich Budde and had two children: Caroline Budde and Louis Budde. Little information on last two children, born either Randolph Co. or Effingham Co., IL. I think hese Buddes are buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Bible Grove, Clay Co., IL. Any info. on this family appreciated.

I just read your message from 1999 and hope you are still online. My grandmother was Gertrude Ruth Kasten, dught of Charley (Charles) William Kasten and Mary E. Guile. According to Charley's Birth record he states that he was born in Wausau Wisconsin. To Frank and Ruth Worley Kasten Germany/Penn. respectively.
Grandma stated in a note she left me that her dad was one of 14 children and the brothers and sister that she remembered were Gustuve, Ernest (she believed that he died in Chicago), and Minnie who married an Ardery. Does this ring a bell? I have hit a very high brick wall with this family.

I believe Pat's health problems had to do with her kidneys.
Not positive as she is very hesitant about discussing it.
Please don't get the wrong picture of her. She is a great
person but just not willing to share personal things. I
have known her for over 20 yrs. My husband and I traveled
to AZ. and stayed with her and Larry several times. Always
had a wonderful time and were treated like family. If you
decide to contact her please don't mention me. I would
never do anything to upset her and I'm not sure how she
would respond to the fact that I gave you her address. As
a fellow "ancestry hunter" I have always been so happy when
someone shared info with me. Can't pass up the chance to

Yes, I do know Pat. I haven't had any direct contact with
her for several years tho. Her health has not been good
for quite some time. Also, she is a VERY private person
and very difficult to get close to. I'm not sure she would
be real happy with me for giving out her address but since
I am searching constantly for my ancestors, and appreciate
any little tidbit I can find, I decided to go ahead and
give you her address. She has never had any children and
I know her Mom passed away several years ago. Maybe she
would appreciate contact with family at this time. All I

My great grandfather was Andreas Kasten who married Auguste Tischer and my grandfather was Friedrich Kasten, born 30 April 1892 he lived in Halberstadt and married my grandmother Martha Tolle who was born on 15 June 1889. My father is called Otto Kasten and was one of five children (his brothers were called Friedrich (Fritz) and Heinrich, and his sisters Martha and Elfriede), my dad is the only surviving male. I still have family in Halberstadt however none with the surname Kasten. I was wondering if there is a relationship between your grandfather and my great grandfather?

We are trying to find ancestors of Henry Kasten who was born in Hannover, Germany in 1825. He married a woman by the name of Elizabeth Bruning(Bruening)born around 1836 also in Hannover. They must have been married in Hannover since their first son Henry was also born in Germany. They emigrated to America sometime before 1859 when my great grandmother Anna Kasten was born in 1859. They settled in St. Louis Mo. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I have a Kasten family from Mishicot area, specifically Town of Gibson. Ferdinand Friedrich Kasten born 1817. He came from Jatzel, Kreis Greifenberg on the border with Kreis Cammin. I have no official document when he came to Manitowoc County, but most likely came with his son in 1865. It seems curious that Kasten families could live in such close proximity and not be related, but I have never been able to connect this family with any of the other Kastens nearby.

I have record of only one son, Ferdinand "Fritz" Kasten born 1849 in Jatzel. It seems odd he would have no siblings. If anyone can connect, please let me know.

Ferdinand Kasten

I'm looking for information on Ferdinand Kasten. He arrived in New York on the ship TUISKO, on November 8, 1867, and his age was 22. The place of departure was Bremen and his destination was Milwaukee. He traveled with a young boy, named Reinhold Albert Kasten, age 7. Reinhold was Ferdinand's younger brother. Reinhold went to live with his older sister, Caroline and her husband Wilhelm Schuelke in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Caroline and Wilhelm had immigrated the year before. Does anyone have any information on Ferdinand after he arrived in Milwaukee?

What town and county were they in 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900?

With some of this info I may be able to find them in my Germans To America series CD's and find the ship.

Did they come over married and what are their aprox birth dates and death dates? Did they come over with another group that you know of? Sometimes it is easier to find them as a group in the Germans To America series.
